There are no hands. The panel is the dial. The 32768 HZ at nine is the number of times a quartz crystal vibrates each second — halve it fifteen times and you get exactly one second. It is how a digital watch keeps time, printed on the dial as its name. Of the two lit windows, the upper one holds the date with its weekday, and the lower one sets the hour and minute in large segments with the seconds small beside them. The windows are labelled by mode rather than content, the way LCD watches have always done it. A panel on the left shows whether the watch is running on AM, PM or a 24-hour clock. Everything else rings the dial. Battery sits at the top, heart rate and the daily step count below the time, temperature and the UV index at the foot. Two quarter arcs on the bezel speak in shape rather than numbers — the upper one fills as the battery charges, the lower one as the day's steps close on your goal. Every digit is set in a segment typeface drawn for this face, laid on a dot-matrix screen. The unlit segments show through behind each digit, the way an actual liquid crystal panel leaves them visible. The panel comes in nine backlight colours — yellow, green, amber, orange, mint, blue, purple, pink and silver. The lit windows, the bezel arcs and the accents change together. When the screen dims it turns to a green phosphor panel and keeps every reading.
